Congratulations to 5S students Elise, Holly, Matt & Geordie who have had their first book published to the iBooks store.

Last term they had the challenge to ‘help others appreciate differences within our community’ and decided to write, illustrate and publish a picture story book for other primary school students. This is what they have to say…

We’re very excited to finally have people read our book. We hope that everyone enjoys it. We started writing this book at the start of term 1 and finished it by the end of term 1. It took us almost 10 weeks to write and illustrate the picture book and another 10 weeks for it to be published on the iBooks store.

We started off with our story plan which we come up with together during the ‘possible solutions’ phase of CBL. Once we got our solution approved we did a real story board of what we wanted our book to be about and look like. Then Elise and Holly started writing the draft while Matt and Geordie began drawing the pictures.

The first challenge we faced was not having enough time to complete the book. We overcame this by having every group member working on something different which we then put together. We also had to learn how to use iBooks Author on the Mac. At first it was hard to navigate and use but once we had a play around we found it easier.

When Geordie and Matt did the illustrations we used different colours to express the emotions the main character was feeling. For example, when he was feeling left out and alone it was just black and white – you can see this in the part where he is watching his friends play. We then took photos of each picture on a camera and imported them into iPhoto which we could then access on iBooks Author.

Once we had finished and edited our story, we downloaded the sample onto our iPads to view and check over. When we were happy with the results Miss Sango published it to the iBooks store. After being checked for ‘quality assurance’ we only had to make small changes with the Author’s name. This is because we were unable to use just our first names as Author’s on the iBooks store so Miss Sango had to use her name instead.

Thank you,

From The Diversity Dynamos – Elise, Holly, Geordie & Matt
